Our
Story

Get to Know Us
My name is James May and I am a Jamaican third-generation immigrant that has lived in the UK for 30 years. Becoming more introspective in adulthood I realised that I knew very little about my people’s history and culture, and many of my peers seemed to have a similar dilemma.
The story of this project began when during a conversation with my friend's Dad, "Dragon", I realised I did not really know anything about Jamaican History, or rather, not as much as I felt I should, considering how familiar I was with European History.
To quote a African chief of Anina, “People who do not know their history move about like chaff that is blown by the wind. If we wish to maintain our stature and status, we need to have a background of what has happened in our past and try not to go away from it, but to maintain it...”

This dilemma would seem two-fold for Jamaicans, especially those living as part of the diaspora who are twice estranged from their homelands and scarcely taught their history and culture.

Marcus Garvey said something similar, "A people without knowledge of their history, culture and origin is like a tree without roots".
As such, this project was undertaken to help improve the Jamaican Diaspora’s engagement with our culture and origins, and compel native Jamaicans to dive a little deeper, further, it is hoped that this project will serve as a cultural capsule for all to benefit from for the foreseeable future.

The Vision and Mission
It is our vision to instill a greater sense of identity and to inform all Jamaicans of all things relevant to Jamaican Culture.

Our mission is to inform and educate the Jamaican diaspora and by extension all Jamaicans of their culture and heritage. The main mechanisms of this mission are materials that detail the main topics of our history, culture and cuisine and further, our readers, who are compelled to inform and educate others so that all our descendants will be well informed of where they have come from and what they are.
